music meme

today was the most ridiculously action-packed day at work (getting new project started while attending training at another place, having 5 ppl call in sick wreacking scheduling havoc while a 6th person handed in a resignation but had misunderstood how many weeks his contract obligate him to work with us = not even half of the craziness, haha), so.. to let off some steam, i feel like doing a meme:

Comment to this post and I'll give you a letter. In your journal, list 10 of your favorite songs that begin with that letter.

I was given the letter H by sarin_girl!

1. Honey don't think - Grant Lee Buffalo. (youtube video)

"Something wrong in my stars/Could you look at my chart
Help me healing these scars/Could you learn to read minds
In the case of mine/Do you read in the dark"

the mood of this song just hits me sometimes. i totally wound up crying like a wuss the time i saw grant lee do this song in chapel hill because i didn't expect it and i was in a front row center seat, and it was just intense to have the dude just a few feet away singing it.

2. Hounds of love - Kate Bush. (youtube video)

"it's in the trees! it's coming!"

i feel a lot like this song when it comes to love, haha. i'm a bit of a reluctant cavewoman, i need to pretty much be clubbed over the head to come to my senses and settle into the whole love thing. because, i totally "don't know what's good for me" hahaha. :)

3. Hyper-ballad - Björk. (youtube video)

"I go through all this/Before you wake up/So I can feel happier/To be safe up here with you"

i just love the imagery in the song a whole lot, always have. cleaning away little things that clutter the mind and the peace to try and keep them from making a mess with people and trying to get things to work..

4. Hey Jupiter - Tori Amos. (youtube live versionyoutube video)

"no one's picking up the phone/guess it's clear he's gone"

those piano-notes that sound like the tone of a ringing phone that isn't being picked up, those sad crying-wails. this is so the "i've been dumped" song for me (well, i have more, of course, but this one definitely worked for teen-me, haha). :)

5. Hit me baby 1 more time - Britney Spears. ( youtube video)

i'm not gonna quote the lyrics. i don't need to quote the lyrics, because i'm pretty sure ya'll totally know them all. oh, teen-britney. sigh.

6. Half acre - Hem (live youtube video)

"I am holding half an acre/Torn from the map of Michigan
I am carrying this scrap of paper/That can crack the darkest sky wide open
Every burden taken from me/Every night my heart unfolding
My home"

i owe anja for this one. the mood of it, the sound of her voice, the words.. it's just such a special entity. it works really well for driving late at night.

7. Heartbeats - The Knife. (youtube video or youtube video of José Gonzales version)

i used to hate the knife video back in 2002, but the song, and especially karin's voice, drew me in and i bought the album. their songs can be hit or miss with me, but when they get the mood right, they really get it right. i was at their first ever live show in march, 2006. it was really strange and beautiful, and sometimes the beats and the bright coloured lights really went right through my body. (i did threaten to leave the show repeatedly because they were 30-60 minutes late going on stage, but once it started i forgave them, haha. first show jitters, i guess.)

8. How soon is now - The Smiths. (youtube video or youtube video of the t.A.T.u.version)

hahaha. oh, the drama. :D that said - i fucking love the tatu version. it's just so weird. russian chicks singing "i am the son and heir" ..hahaha. whaaaaaat? it's fun. (i don't love that as much as i love britney spear's cover of "i can't get no satisfaction" though. lovvvve it.)

9. Hurt - Nine Inch Nails. (youtube video from stockholm show august 8: great sound, bad video or youtube video from stockholm, decent sound, better video with up close trent!)

i know, i know, johnny cash's version and video is just... intense. but i've seen trent do this live 3 times this year, and it gave me chills every time because the audience would sing along and it would just be sooo.... beautiful. shut up. haha.

the youtube videos gives you a great glimpse of the sing-a-long the audience did at the stockholm show 2 weeks ago, and how lovely the pixel-raining backdrop was. the last minute and a half when the lights flood and the band kicks in is always enough to make the hairs on my arms stand up. it was sooooo wonderful live. great singalong. i love singalongs. sigh.

that said, while the version in stockholm 2 weeks ago really slayed me (i'm so lame), i love this version from the april show in stockholm - listen to the audience! the audience was even better then, and the singalong was wonderful. hee. :)

10. Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley (Leonard Cohen). ( youtube live video)

it's all about that extended note that just floats and floats and floats, like a thin spider-thread in the air that just won't break. but you knew that.

yeah yeah. trust me to fuck a simple meme up by over-babbling. ok, HAVE TO SLEEP. tomorrow will be another completely over the top day. oh well. it's fun, in all it's chaos.

i have to admit that i really like the Tatu version of How Soon is Now as well. sadly, though, in an interview, when asked if the girls themselves liked the original by The Smiths, the response was, "who?"

Tue, Aug. 21st, 2007 04:48 pm (UTC)

see, i love that, though. i love that trevor horn just went "hey girls, sing this" and they did. it gives an extra dimension of incomprehension. hahahaha. :D
